The Mzimkulwana River is a short river that is best known as being the one that flows through the magnificent Oribi Gorge. The best views of the river are probably the ones from the Oribi Gorge Hotel situated along the top of the gorge. Those brave souls among us will find places where you can sit with your legs dangling and take in the great views. The Wildebeest wouldn't try this and doesn't recommend trying it!
The river has cut through the rock over millions of years. In fact, some sources say that it has taken 1,000 million years. There are many granite boulders in or near the river that have tumbled down the cliffs over the millenia.
If you take the road through Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve you will find that a low bridge crosses the river at the bottom. This is one of my favourite places to take in the scenery. There is a picnic spot in the area but you may need to pay to visit it.
The Mzimkulwana River joins the Mzimkhulu River before flowing into the Indian Ocean at Port Shepstone.
