Northern Cape

The town of Calvinia gets its name from John Calvin, a suggestion made by Reverend Hofmeyr, of the Dutch Reformed Church, in 1851.

Calvinia experiences extreme temperatures at times with occasional summer temperatures of around 40 degrees Celsius and winter lows below zero.

In spring the town is a popular tourist destination by people wanting to experience the beauty of the wildflowers.
