KwaZulu-Natal

Fort Nottingham is situated about 15 kilometres away from the town of Nottingham Road in the KwaZulu-Natal midlands. It is open from Wednesday through to Sunday. The surrounding area is peaceful farmlands and is nice countryside to drive through.

The fort is made up of a collection of small buildings one of which has been converted into a museum.

In 1856 a regiment of soldiers from Nottinghamshire, the 45th 'Sherwood Foresters', was stationed here and that is where the fort got its name. The troops mission was to prevent raids on the settlers cattle. The name "South Africa" appears on the regimental badge of the regiment (amongst many other places).

The larger town of Nottingham Road came into being later when it was first as the Nottingham Road railway station. For some reason the railway line bypassed the Fort which led to the development of the town.

Have you visited the Fort? Was it interesting for you?
